Alternative Holiday Celebrations in Vancouver

With all the cultural groups celebrating their own holidays, it’s a moment that’s rich in learning potential. Here are a few of these events that you can attend during the holiday season.

Winter Solstice Festival

The world-famous Dr. Sun Yat Sen Gardens will host the Winter Solstice Festival on December 21 from 6 to 10PM. Come visit these beautifully landscaped gardens in the Chinese style, learn about Chinese immigration to Vancouver, and look in wonder at the beautiful lanterns and lights. There will be tea, hot buns and plenty of entertainment. Entrance is $5, $10 for families.

Post-Channukah On Ice

Avoid the Boxing Day crowds and go skating with Vancouver’s Jewish Community at Post-Channukah on Ice at the Trout Lake ice rink on December 26 from 3h30 to 5h30 PM. There will be Jewish music, food and face painting. A great way to relax and burn some of those holiday calories! $10 in advance, $12 at the door.

Winter Solstice Lantern Festival

Join Vancouver’s multicultural community at the Winter Solstice Lantern Festival on December 21 at Yaletown’s Roundhouse from 6 to 10PM. Come enjoy lanterns from cultures around the world as they light up the longest night of the year. Fire, dancing, singing, music and storytelling will keep you entertained. There will also be a candlelit labyrinth to promote thoughtfulness and meditation during this ritually important night of the year. The event is free for all ages.
